What do you do wrong (part 1)? (Impact Improver, Vol 2 Issue 39)
No doubt you're busy marketing your business and no doubt you believe that you've thought through your marketing plan clearly, logically and sensibly. I'm willing to bet there're some things you're doing that are plain wrong. Have a read of what follows and be honest with yourself. Nobody else needs to know how you respond to the points below. As long as you know and do something about it - that's what counts. . . . keep reading

Multi-tasking isn't all it's cracked up to be (Impact Improver, Vol 2, Issue 38)
Multi-tasking isn't all it's cracked up to be Harry Alder interviewed 150 top business executives for his book called 'Think Like a Leader'. The details of the book aren't really relevant to the action point for this week's broadcast - but one observation he made very definitely is. Dr Alder found that one defining attribute that the most successful people have is their universal ability to shut off from work as soon as they leave the office. . . . keep reading

Finding more energy to do stuff (Impact Improver, Volume 2, Issue 37)
Although there may be many things that stop me "getting stuff done", I find one of the biggest blocks is having enough energy to just keep on going and crash through all the obstacles until I reach my goal. When I look back from the moral high ground of hard work and achievement, I realise that many of those blocks were combinations of a lack of focus and procrastination. Energy seems to be the antidote, so the question has to be, from where can we get more of it? . . . keep reading

Recovering lost time (Impact Improver, Volume 2, Issue 36)
Each of us has 24 hours in his or her day. A significant amount of that time is spent in meetings of one sort or another - be they meetings with colleagues, potential suppliers, prospects, clients - you name it, we end up in meetings with all these people. Some of these meetings are exploratory and by their very nature have no real, overt, fixed agenda - I'm thinking of the traditional "networking" meeting here. The vast majority of our meetings though do have a fixed agenda - or maybe I'd better say, could have a fixed agenda, if somebody actually produced one. In this Impact Improver I'll give you some thoughts on improving the efficiency of your meetings. . . . keep reading

Why discounts are bad news (Impact Improver, Volume 2, Issue 35)
Why are discounts disastrous and bonuses beneficial? Giving a discount is a favor granted by you to the buyer. A bonus is something that has to be earned. That is a huge difference. . . . keep reading

Making the Impossible, Possible (Impact Improver, Volume 2, Issue 34)
Making the impossible, possible In Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll wrote "Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." Today, I don't know if you've had your breakfast or not yet, but I certainly don't want you to believe six impossible things. Just one will do to start with. The one impossible thing that I want you to believe today - and I really mean BELIEVE it with every ounce (or gram) of your being - is that you actually, really, truly, honestly CAN achieve your long term goals in life. Don't quite believe it - read on . . . keep reading

Business DIY and when to get help (Impact Improver, Volume 2, Issue 33)
More than once I've been asked to write about "outsourcing", "delegation" and other aspect of "getting help" into a speaking business. Given that this is a fairly general business topic, I hope this broadcast is as useful to owners of other small businesses, as it is to professional speakers. . . . keep reading

How to write a useful book - quickly! (Impact Improver, Volume 2, Issue 32)
I want to revisit this topic this week, simply because of direct personal experience that has made such a dramatic impact on me. Until recently I had written and published two books - both part of my "Successful Speaking Secrets" series. They are sold as part of a home study box set, along with audio and video disks. A short while ago I decided that I wanted to write a "pocket guide" to accompany the full material - and this week's Impact Improver tells the story so far. . . . keep reading

What's the price of free? (Part Two) Impact Improver, Vol 2, issue 30
A continuation from last week's episode, in which I introduced Chris Anderson's latest book, 'Free: The Future of a Radical Price'. I challenged you to come up with ideas on how you could use the idea of a 'free' price point to generate new revenue for your business. . . . keep reading

What's the Price of Free? (Part One of Imapact Improver, Vol 2, Issue 29)
A reflection this week on the latest thoughts of Chris Anderson, who first appeared on may people's radar with his excellent book 'The Long Tail'. In this book Chris reviewed the impact of the digital age on society, using the music and film industries as examples. His most recent book is 'Free: The Future of a Radical Price' and he's written a really interesting article on the same subject in the August (UK) edition of 'Wired' magazine. . . . keep reading
